If you have ever watched "The Descent", you might not want to have anything to do with Cave adventures. But here at Lave Cave River in Flagstaff, there are no cliffs, not rapid currents, no waterfalls, no alien like creature. This mile-long lava tube cave was formed roughly 700,000 years ago by molten rock that erupted from a volcanic vent in nearby Hart Prairie.Pitch-black, cold(about 30℉ all year round at entrance) and wet inside, rough and rocky terrain, make sure that you are well-prepared. You might as well turn around if you do not have any headlights (flash lights are OK, but you might need to free you hands for rock climbing or jumping). If you wear your high heels, wedges, sandals, leather shoes, you might have your ankle sprained inside. There are slippery patches due to underground water dripping from ceiling. Sturdy high hiking boots are highly recommended. It is a little rough to get down, opens up once side. The mile long hike is filled with the solid natural lava floor that is rugged and choppy. But it is a really cool experience to see how the lava created this underground tube, it has been left in its original state.
